A water-dispersible hexazinone herbicide for specific crop, forestry, brush, and non-crop uses.

A water-dispersible concentrate

Tide Hexazinone 2SL is a water-dispersible liquid containing 25 percent hexazinone, or 2 pounds of active ingredient per gallon. For many applications, it is mixed with water and sprayed. Certain brush-control jobs use an undiluted basal soil treatment or stem injection instead. These methods reach different plant parts and require different equipment. Identify the target woody species and work site before choosing a treatment method; a spray rate cannot be transferred to basal work or injection.

Match the site before mixing

The listed use settings include alfalfa, blueberries, pineapple, sugarcane, Christmas trees, forestry site preparation and release, industrial areas, and specified pasture, rangeland, reforestation, and non-crop brush work. This is not a general-purpose yard weed killer. Crop and forestry treatments can injure nearby desirable trees and shrubs because roots may extend into treated soil. Check soil texture and organic matter, rainfall pattern, the target weed, crop stage, and surrounding vegetation before treatment.

Moisture and weed size affect performance

Hexazinone enters plants through roots and foliage. Soil moisture activates its residual activity. Best results are associated with moist soil at treatment and rainfall within two weeks. Treat before weeds exceed 2 inches in height or diameter for the best results described for the product. Warm, humid conditions with good soil moisture support foliar activity. Dormant, stressed, or semi-dormant vegetation may respond less well. Herbaceous plants may show symptoms in about two weeks during warm, humid weather, while cool or dry conditions can stretch that to four to six weeks. Woody plants can take three to six weeks after sufficient rainfall moves the treatment into the root zone.

Use Group 5 thoughtfully

Hexazinone is a Group 5 herbicide that inhibits photosystem II. Repeated use of the same site of action can select resistant weeds. Scout the area before treatment to identify species and growth stage, then check afterward for control and surviving patches. A failed patch can reflect resistance, weather, application quality, or an incorrect target identification. Rotate effective modes of action and use nonchemical removal where practical to prevent escapes from setting seed.

Protect water and non-target plants

Hexazinone can leach through permeable soils, especially where the water table is shallow, so location and dose matter. Keep applications out of lakes, reservoirs, ponds, streams, and canals. Some temporary wet areas can be treated only when no water is present, such as certain dry floodplain or management-created areas. The active ingredient can also move through roots into desirable trees and shrubs beside a treated area. Prevent spray drift, protect workers, and keep equipment washwater out of water. Choose a treatment only when the crop or work site, target plant, soil, and local restrictions all fit the application instructions for this product.

Active ingredients

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Hexazinone (3-cyclohexyl-6-(dimethylamino)-1-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione) 25.0%. OTHER INGREDIENTS 75.0%. TOTAL 100.0%. Contains 2.0 lb active ingredient per gallon.

Directions for use

Tide USA Hexazinone 2SL is a water-dispersible liquid used as a spray in alfalfa, blueberry, pineapple, sugarcane, Christmas trees, forestry site preparation and release areas, and industrial areas. Undiluted basal soil treatment is permitted for brush control in reforestation areas, rangeland, pastures, and noncrop areas; stem injection is also permitted for brush control. Rates and methods are tied to site, soil, crop or target, and geography. For broadcast use on non-crop sites, livestock may graze immediately after rates of 4.5 pt/A (1.125 lb a.i./A) or less, and treated vegetation may be cut, dried and fed after 38 days. Do not cut treated vegetation for feed or graze livestock for 60 days after broadcast rates above 4.5 pt/A and up to 3 gal/A (6 lb a.i./A). Above 3 gal/A, do not cut treated vegetation for forage or hay or graze domestic animals for 1 year. Directed basal-soil applications have no grazing or haying restrictions. Non-crop application limits: do not use on frozen soil, lawns, driveways, tennis courts or other residential or recreational areas; use only in bermudagrass or bahiagrass stands established at least one year; do not treat newly sprigged or sodded areas; do not exceed 4 gal/A per application or per year; do not make more than one application per year; and do not exceed 3 gal/A by air.

Absorbed through roots and foliage. Soil moisture is required to activate soil activity. Best results are associated with moist soil at application and 1/4 to 1/2 inch of rainfall within two weeks. Apply preemergence or postemergence when weeds are less than 2 inches tall or wide. Foliar activity is most effective above 80°F, in high humidity and with good soil moisture. Dormant, semi-dormant or stressed vegetation may respond less. Herbaceous symptoms may take 2 weeks in warm humid conditions or 4 to 6 weeks in cool or dry conditions. Woody-plant symptoms may take 3 to 6 weeks after sufficient rainfall carries the material into the root zone.

Christmas trees only: broadcast rates by soil and planting stage

These rates apply to Christmas tree crops only. For band application, use proportionately less; for example, use one-half of the broadcast rate for a 3-foot band where row spacing is 6 feet. Use the higher end of the rate range on heavier soil. First-year plantings are transplant stock at least 2 years old, except loblolly pine at least 1 year old. Apply only if rainfall has settled soil around the base and root systems of transplants. Established trees have been planted for at least 1 year.

Christmas-tree use precautions: Spring applications depend on sufficient moisture to activate the product. Poor weed and brush control may result from heavy duff or slash, poorly drained sites, saturated soil with rain imminent within 24 hours, or soil with more than 5% organic matter. Injury may occur to trees showing poor vigor, insect damage, disease, winter injury or other stress; soil with less than 1% organic matter; loamy sand or sandy loam with less than 2% organic matter except Jeffrey and Ponderosa pine; foliage after bud break; and gravelly or rocky soil, exposed subsoil, clay knobs, or sand/sandy soil with 85% or more sand. Do not cut treated vegetation for feed or graze livestock for 60 days after broadcast rates above 4.5 pt/A. At 4.5 pt/A or less, livestock may graze immediately, but do not feed treated vegetation for 38 days; treated vegetation may be cut, dried and fed after 38 days.

Soil textureFirst-year plantingsEstablished trees

Medium: loam, silt loam, silt, clay loam, sandy clay loam4–5 pt/A (1–1.25 lb a.i.)5–7 pt/A (1.25–1.75 lb a.i.)
Fine: silty clay loam, clay loam, sandy clay, silty clay, clay5–6 pt/A (1.25–1.5 lb a.i.)7–8 pt/A (1.75–2 lb a.i.)

For this use, do not exceed 8 pt/A per application or per year and do not make more than one application per year. Do not use in nurseries, seed beds, or ornamental plantings. Do not add surfactant over conifers. Apply in spring before bud break in the Eastern United States. If applying after bud break, use directional spray equipment to keep product off foliage. Site-specific state prohibitions and other crop restrictions also apply.

For forestry, minimum spray volumes are 5 gal/A by air and 10 gal/A by ground equipment. Do not apply directly to water or where surface water is present. Do not apply to lakes, reservoirs, ponds, streams, or canals. Temporary surface-water areas can be treated only when no water is present. Desirable trees and shrubs may absorb the herbicide through roots extending into treated areas. Hexazinone can leach through soil under certain conditions, especially permeable soils with a shallow water table.

Non-crop brush broadcast

For ground broadcast, apply 2–4 gal/A (4–8 lb a.i./A) as a coarse spray. For aerial broadcast by helicopter only, apply 2–3 gal/A (4–6 lb a.i./A). Use enough water for thorough coverage, usually at least 25 gal/A for ground equipment and at least 10 gal/A for aerial equipment. Apply from late winter through summer, from before bud break until new growth hardens. Soil texture governs the weed rate: use the low rate on coarse-textured soil (sand to sandy loam), and the higher rate on fine-textured soil (clay loam to clay) or soil with high organic matter.

Use ground equipment only with enough water for thorough coverage, at least 25 gal/A. Surfactant is not advised. Apply to established stands at least one year old; do not treat newly sprigged or sodded areas. Do not use on residential or recreational areas.

For agricultural use, the restricted-entry interval is 48 hours. For aerial applications, use medium or coarser droplets, do not release spray higher than 10 feet above the vegetative canopy except for pilot safety, do not exceed 15 mph, and do not apply during temperature inversions. Ground-boom nozzles must be no higher than 4 feet above the ground or crop canopy; use medium or coarser droplets and do not exceed 15 mph or apply during inversions. Crop-specific rates, application restrictions, and harvest limits vary; consult the complete current product label for the intended site.
